Company Overview

Bye Bye Mattress is a mattress recycling program operating in California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The program was established by a legal mandate, and is operated by the Mattress Recycling Council. This nonprofit company collects a recycling fee for every mattress and box spring sold, and the collected funds are used to improve accessibility and efficiency of recycling in communities. Whether a mattress is discarded through city trash pick up, retailer exchange, or consumer drop off, Bye Bye Mattress effectively transforms a household’s old product from waste to recycling. As a result, landfills and incinerators are less crowded as old mattresses are recycled into new, useful products.

As the lead designer I had a major role in redeveloping the BBM brand and responsive web design. Using their already established BBM logo, color palette and brand illustrations, we gave their brand a face-lift that created a welcoming identity to engage their audience. We used tattered edges, paper background patterns, and large color blocks with overlaid illustrations to invoke an attitude of fun and exciting possibilities.

Being a site used to educate the public, and most importantly, a vital tool utilized by the public to locate a mattress recycling location, user-friendliness to a wide audience was a crucial component kept in mind when we designed Bye Bye Mattress’ digital presence. Using a short header image on the homepage allows the map and mattress facility locator to be at the forefront of the site. This allows users to immediately begin filling out the information needed to find a facility near them, so the locator can swiftly show the closest recycling options. Then, after using the facility locator, users can continue exploring the site to learn more about BBM, what the state laws are, why mattress recycling is important, and learn answers to frequently asked questions.
